introduction
River Gallery, the latest addition to Yangon's art scene, has been set up to showcase the works of Myanmar's leading contemporary artists.
For a country where foreign influence has been limited over the past forty years, Myanmar's art has a surprisingly modern feel. The creative tension evident in many of the best works results from the artist's struggle to find the means of portraying their rich culture in new and different ways.
Located adjacent to the famous Strand Hotel, River Gallery gives visitors the chance to view an unrivalled range of the best contemporary art that Myanmar has to offer. With over 30 artists represented, visitors will see examples of the many different styles, subjects and media that Myanmar artists are using to express their individual vision.
River is managed by Gill Pattison, a New Zealander, who has been resident in Myanmar for four years. Ms Pattison first became involved with the contemporary art scene when she sponsored and organized, in conjunction with The Myanmar Times, a national competition for Myanmar artists in 2004. The competition identified many of the best Myanmar artists - both established and emerging - who now show their work in River Gallery.
Her aim is to bring the best Myanmar art to a wider audience. This includes not only the tourists who visit Myanmar, but also to an international audience. To this end, she is organizing exhibitions and shows abroad for selected Myanmar artists.
